Remo Stars have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League. The Sky Blue Stars dropped into the Nigeria National League just 13 months after lifting their first-ever league title.
The Ikenne-based club become the first reigning champions in NPFL history to suffer relegation during their title defence.
Remo Stars entered the final day needing a win to survive. They faced Bendel Insurance away in Benin City on Sunday. The Sky Blue Stars took the lead in the first half, putting themselves on course for safety.
But deep into added time, Bendel Insurance found an equaliser. The late strike shattered Remo’s survival hopes. The result left them with 47 points from 38 matches, level with Kwara United. Their inferior goal difference condemned them to the drop.
Kun Khalifat’s 3-1 victory over Wikki Tourists confirmed the final relegation spot hours later. Remo Stars were officially out.
85% squad turnover and statistical collapse
Between 75 and 85 percent of the title-winning squad departed within months. Captain Junior Nduka, goalkeeper Kayode Bankole, assist leader Sodiq Ismail, midfield star Tochukwu Michael and top scorer Sikiru Alimi all left. Key players moved to clubs in Austria, Sudan, South Africa and Algeria. At least 17 regulars exited, many on free transfers. Few experienced replacements arrived.

The statistical collapse was brutal. During their championship season, Remo recorded 22 wins, five draws and 11 defeats. They conceded just 31 goals, with a goal difference of plus 18. Their win rate stood at 1.87 points per game.
By the end of 2025/26, after 25 matches, they had managed only eight wins, three draws and 16 defeats. Goals conceded rose to 34. Their win rate effectively halved. Clean sheets became rare. By February, they had already exceeded their total number of losses from the entire championship season.
The club’s CAF Champions League campaign ended in humiliation. After beating Comoros’ US Zilimadjou 4-0 in the preliminary round, they were thrashed 5-1 by South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in Abeokuta. The return leg in Pretoria was a mere formality.
Constant firefighting
Remo hired Usman Abd’Allah as technical adviser in February to salvage the season. The coach brought hope, leading the team to a crucial 2-1 win over Bayelsa United that briefly lifted them out of the relegation zone. But consistency never returned.
The final day summed up their season. A lead held. An equaliser conceded. Survival slipping away in stoppage time. The champions of 2025 are the relegated of 2026.
