Threads launches 10k character text option for posts

Threads has introduced a new feature allowing users to attach text notes of up to 10,000 characters, expanding beyond the previous 500-character limit.

The update, rolled out globally on September 4, 2025, provides a blog-style editor within the post composer. Users can now draft long-form content directly on the app and share it under a “Read more” prompt for easier viewing.

According to Threads, the change addresses how users often rely on screenshots of books, articles, newsletters, and transcripts when posts exceed character limits. A spokesperson explained that the new format will help creators share perspectives more clearly and promote their work within the platform.

The editor also supports external links in the main post, enabling seamless redirection to full articles or platforms. This contrasts with X’s approach, which restricts long-form posting to premium subscribers and discourages external linking.

Threads has repeatedly emphasized that posts with links are not penalized in reach, suggesting the platform aims to encourage discovery and sharing beyond its walls. Analysts note that this could benefit writers and bloggers by boosting audience engagement both on and off-platform.

The feature is being made available to all Threads users at no additional cost. Its success, however, will depend on adoption rates and how longer updates shape user behaviors over time.

“Longer attachments allow people to move beyond screenshots,” Threads stated. “We want to make space for richer conversations and clearer expression.”
