President Bola Tinubu has appointed Olugbemisola Odusote as the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School.

The appointment, announced on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone in the institution’s 64-year history.

Odusote, 54, will become the first woman to lead the Nigerian Law School since its establishment in 1962.

Odusote is a seasoned academic and administrator who currently serves as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus.

Her journey at the Nigerian Law School began in 2001 as a lecturer, and she has since climbed the ranks through various leadership roles, including Head of Academic Department and Director of Academics.

She obtained her LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University, specialising in Company and Commercial Law, and was called to the Bar in 1988.

She later earned a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, with a focus on Public Law and the Administration of Justice.

In addition, she gained international academic exposure by serving as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the UK.

Odusote will assume her new role on January 10, 2026, for an initial four-year term.

She succeeds the outgoing Director-General, Professor Isa Chiroma, whose eight-year tenure concludes on January 9, 2026.

As the head of the institution, she will oversee the academic leadership and strategic management of all Law School campuses across the federation.

Crucially, she will serve as the primary link between the school and key legal bodies, including the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Beyond her administrative roles, Odusote is a prolific researcher with extensive publications in reputable local and international law journals.

Her appointment is seen as a reinforcement of Tinubu’s commitment to meritocracy and gender inclusion within Nigeria’s critical educational and judicial institutions.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed confidence in Odusote’s ability to provide the strategic direction needed to modernise legal training in Nigeria.
