Déby secured victory in the presidential elections with 61.3% of the vote, as declared by the state’s election body, legitimizing his hold on power. His closest competitor, Prime Minister Succes Masra, garnered 18.53% of the vote.
Masra had initially claimed a “resounding victory” in the first round of voting and alleged that the victory had been unjustly taken away from the people.
At 40 years old, Gen Déby assumed leadership in Chad following his father, Idriss Déby Itno’s, death in April 2021 during a confrontation with rebel forces. Déby’s electoral success ensures the continuation of the Déby family’s 34-year reign.
