President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development to harness the potential of the sector.Ā

Tinubu made this declaration on Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms.

“In our states, where we have vast opportunities, why should Nigerians continue to face conflicts? With the caliber of individuals present here, we have a unique opportunity to establish a dedicated ministry, the Ministry of Livestock Development. This will enable our veterinary doctors to conduct essential research and cross-breeding, thereby curbing senseless killings,” Tinubu emphasised.

The committee aims to tackle barriers to agricultural productivity and create new prospects for farmers, herders, processors, and distributors in the livestock sector.

Tinubu appointed the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega as Co-Chairman of the Committee.

President Tinubu stressed that effective implementation of these reforms requires collaborative efforts from committee members drawn from both public and private sectors, state governors, and all Nigerians.

“I urge everyone to set aside partisan politics. I will lead the committee as President, with Professor Attahiru Jega serving as my deputy or co-chair. This initiative transcends politics; it is about seizing opportunities for our nation. Even in my absence, Jega will lead and continue to advance our objectives,” stated the President.

During the inauguration at the Council Chamber of the State House, President Tinubu thanked Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for assembling a team of experienced experts to activate opportunities in the livestock sector.

President Tinubu highlighted the need to modernize traditional livestock farming methods in collaboration with state governments to foster growth and prosperity.

He announced that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, will address legal barriers to reform implementation, while Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, will support with automation.

“We have access to modern technology and we are prepared to act. Let us prioritize removing any laws hindering our goals with the support of the Attorney-General. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning is here to allocate necessary funds, and the Minister of Finance will manage financial aspects,” President Tinubu affirmed.

President Tinubu urged comprehensive and collective support from all stakeholders for the reforms.

“We must incentivize Nigeria to capitalize on livestock farming, dairy production, and cold-chain logistics, which collectively offer significant commercial and economic benefits. This sector will enhance agricultural productivity, expand export opportunities, and spur economic growth through a robust value chain benefiting farmers, processors, herders, distributors, and consumers.ā€
