Togo scraps visa for African passport holders

Togo has eliminated entry visa requirements for all African citizens holding valid national passports, effective from May 18, 2026.

The decision was announced through an official communiqué by the country’s Ministry of Security, signed by Calixte Batossie Madjoulba.

The government stated that the policy aligns with efforts to make Togo a regional hub for services, business, culture, and human exchange at the heart of Africa.

“It aligns with the dynamics of openness, modernization, and attractiveness driven by the President of the Council,” the statement read.

The visa waiver applies only to visits lasting a maximum of 30 days and covers all land, air, and maritime entry points.

African travellers must still complete a pre-registration process at least 24 hours before arrival through a government platform.

After registration, travellers receive a “bordereau de voyage” which must be presented at border entry points.

The government clarified that the exemption does not prevent enforcement of laws relating to irregular migration or national security.

The move reflects growing continental efforts to ease movement and boost trade, cooperation, and tourism across Africa.

According to the April 2026 Henley Passport Index, Nigeria has visa-free access to 44 destinations, including 18 African countries such as Togo, Ghana, Kenya, and Senegal.

Tightening immigration policies in the US, UK, and Australia have intensified conversations around intra-African mobility and regional access.
