Top European League Review: Chelsea, Liverpool draw, Arsenal win

Top leagues across Europe are winding down gradually as we bring you a review of some of the top flight games.

There are just three or two games left to play in most European leagues. Below are some of the reports from the games.

English Premier League

CHELSEA V WOLVES

Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Wolves in a Premier League fixture on Saturday.

The Blues dropped points in front of their new owner, Todd Boehly, who sat in Roman Abramovich’s director’s box seat.

The host raced into a two-goal lead in the second half after the opening 45 minutes ended goalless.

Romelu Lukaku converted from the spot, before bending in a fine finish. Chelsea remain third with 67 points, one more than fourth-placed Arsenal.

BRIGHTON V MANCHESTER UNITED

Brighton thrashed Manchester United 4-0 at the Amex Stadium to ensure the visitors will finish the season with their worst points total in Premier League history.

A Moises Caicedo strike early in the first half (15). After the break, goals from Marc Cucurella (49), Pascal Gross (57) and Leandro Trossard (60) followed. Brighton was yet to win at home since Boxing Day.

They produced a brilliant performance to remain on course for their highest top-flight finish.

LIVERPOOL V TOTTENHAM

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was critical of Tottenham’s tactics after their 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday, saying: “I don’t like this kind of football.”

Heung-Min Son’s goal early in the second half had threatened to bring a first Premier League home defeat of the season for Klopp’s side, before Luis Diaz levelled things up late on.

However, the draw sees the Reds drop two points to put Manchester City in charge in the title race.

ARSENAL V LEEDS UNITED

Eddie Nketiah got a brace in this one to take his tally of the season to nine goals. A swift move from Arsenal saw the 22-year-old finish things off by finding the back of the net for a second time.

Minutes later, Leeds captain Luke Ayling was sent off for an unnecessary challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

It left Leeds with too much to do, although they surprisingly got a goal of their own from a corner when Diego Llorente headed past Aaron Ramsdale to set up a tense final 25 minutes.

MANCHESTER CITY V NEWCASTLE

First-half goals from Raheem Sterling and Aymeric Laporte ensured Pep Guardiola’s side settled any pre-match nerves relatively early. They took advantage of Liverpool’s slip up against Tottenham as they shrugged off their midweek Champions League setback in style.

Rodri added the third goal on the hour mark from Kevin De Bruyne’s corner. substitute Phil Foden and Sterling with his second of the game underlined their dominance as City produced an emphatic second-half performance in the Manchester sunshine.

Spanish La Liga

REAL BETIS V BARCELONA

Barcelona achieved one of their main objectives of the season as they secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season by beating Real Betis 2-1 at Estadio Benito Villamarin.

The Catalan giants were unable to break down the hosts up until the 76th minute when academy ace Ansu Fati, making just his second appearance after a lengthy injury layoff, found the back of the net to hand Xavi’s men the lead.

ATLETICO MADRID V REAL MADRID

Since the La Liga title is wrapped up, Real made seven changes following their dramatic win over Manchester City on Wednesday.

Atletico started strongly and Yannick Carrasco converted what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot after Matheus Cunha was brought down.

Diego Simeone’s side remains fourth, six points clear of Real Betis in fifth.

Italian Serie A

GENOA V JUVENTUS

Paulo Dybala put Juve ahead, but Albert Gudmundsson and Domenico Criscito, via a last-gasp penalty, earned the points for Genoa.

The game was pretty cagey early on and Juventus had little on the line.

For Genoa, though, they knew that a win was necessary after Salernitana had climbed out of the bottom three on Thursday night and onto 29 points.
