Sallah: Lagos govt reaffirms ban on livestock sales on highways

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its ban on the sale of rams and other livestock on major highways, road medians and public parks.

The state government issued a stern warning to residents and traders ahead of this yearโ€™s Eid al-Kabir (Ileya) celebrations.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning on Monday during a media briefing in his office.

Wahab said the government would not tolerate the conversion of public infrastructure into makeshift markets during the festive period.

He stressed that commercial activities must not undermine public health or environmental order.

He maintained that while the Sallah season naturally increases demand for livestock, trading must be conducted in designated areas in line with state regulations.

He listed prohibited locations to include major highways and secondary roads, road medians and lay-bys, as well as public gardens and recreational parks.

Wahab warned that any attempt to deface the environment or obstruct public spaces would attract enforcement action.

He also cautioned against illegal stall construction, improper waste disposal, and unsanitary slaughter practices.


Enforcement measures

The commissioner extended festive greetings to Muslim faithful but urged residents to ensure proper waste disposal throughout the celebration.

He said all refuse generated during the period should be properly bagged and deposited at approved collection points.

He added that the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) had been fully mobilised to prevent waste accumulation before, during and after the festivities.

Wahab added that the government would enforce environmental laws strictly against offenders.

He also advised residents to make use of designated recreational centres and parks for leisure activities, rather than obstructing roads and public spaces during the holiday period.
