Information Minister Mohammed Idris stated Thursday that President Tinubu never directed suppression of press freedom or dissenting views in Nigeria.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu has not issued any directive to suppress the media or curtail press freedom in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 2024 Nigerian Media Leaders’ Summit in Abuja, Idris said the Tinubu administration remains committed to upholding democratic values, including freedom of expression and independent journalism.

“The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has never and will never issue any directive to suppress media freedom or silence dissent,” the minister declared.

He emphasized that journalists play a critical role in democratic development and that the administration welcomes constructive criticism as part of governance.

Idris noted that the Ministry of Information is working to rebuild public trust in government communication and promote transparency. He urged media professionals to operate within ethical standards while safeguarding national unity and security.

The summit, attended by senior media executives, focused on addressing misinformation, improving journalism standards, and strengthening the relationship between government and the press.
