NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the largest FIFA World Cup in history kicked off on Thursday, 11 June 2026, across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The expanded competition featured 48 men’s national teams battling for glory in 104 matches over six weeks.
Mexico opened the tournament against South Africa, while South Korea faced the Czech Republic. The United States began its campaign against Paraguay on Friday night.
Although the competition attracted strong viewership figures, fans and observers raised concerns over expensive ticket prices and the logistical challenges of travelling between venues spread across the three host nations.
Global displacement recorded first decline in a decade
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported the first decline in global forced displacement in ten years after releasing its flagship Global Trends Report in Geneva, NRTC WEEKLY learnt.

UN High Commissioner Barham Salih announced that the global refugee population fell by three per cent over the past year to 41.6 million people.
Despite the reduction, the UN warned that millions of displaced persons remained stranded in prolonged exile and urged the international community to continue supporting humanitarian programmes, including those assisting more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
World Bank projected slowest growth since COVID-19
NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the World Bank warned that the global economy was heading towards its weakest growth rate since the COVID-19 pandemic.
In its latest Global Economic Prospects report, the institution projected global growth at 2.5 per cent for the remainder of 2026.
The report attributed the slowdown to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, rising energy prices and persistent inflationary pressures.
The World Bank also noted that higher borrowing costs and weaker investment flows widened the gap between developed and developing economies, although countries such as India continued to post strong growth driven by infrastructure expansion and technology investments.
SpaceX made history with record-breaking IPO
SpaceX entered the history books on Friday, 12 June 2026, after launching its long-awaited Initial Public Offering (IPO), NRTC WEEKLY learnt.
The aerospace company raised a record $75 billion, pushing its valuation to $1.77 trillion.

Air India crash left one survivor in Ahmedabad
NRTC WEEKLY gathered that a tragic aviation accident occurred in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, on Friday, 12 June 2026, when Air India Flight 171 crashed shortly after take-off.

The aircraft carried 242 passengers and crew members. Authorities confirmed that only one person survived the crash.
