We are struggling to eat – Ruth Kadiri reacts to soaring food prices

Nollywood Ruth Kadiri has expressed concern over the rising cost of living in Nigeria, saying that even basic food items have become difficult for many households to afford.

She shared her thoughts in a video posted on her Instagram page, where she spoke about the pressure many Nigerians are facing as food prices continue to increase.

She said the cost of feeding has gone beyond what many families can manage, pointing out that everyday items like tomatoes and pepper now take a large part of household income.

She noted that what used to be affordable is now placing heavy pressure on both low and middle-income earners.

Kadiri added that even people who are financially stable are beginning to feel the strain, raising concerns about how those earning modest salaries are coping with the situation.

She also explained that while she is not used to speaking out about personal worries, the current economic situation has become difficult to ignore, as it is affecting people’s comfort and emotional well-being.

She said: “As a human being, I’m not known for complaining. But you see, the past couple of days have been so troubling for me. Because if somebody like me can start to feel the brunt of the heaviness of being a human being, I wonder what other people are going through.

“The cost of tomatoes is now so high. Like, somebody will use ₦5,000 to buy pepper and tomato. Like, ₦5,000. We’re struggling to eat. While somebody else out there is probably earning 25, 30, 40, ₦50,000. But you are only using 5,000 to buy tomatoes and peppers. A basket of tomatoes, we don’t even want to say that. You know, the cost of feeding, which is basic in Nigeria, is now so high.”
