United States lawmaker Riley Moore has commended Nigeria’s House of Representatives for passing the state police bill, describing it as a major step toward tackling insecurity and protecting vulnerable communities.

The constitutional amendment, adopted during Thursday’s plenary, empowers Nigeria’s 36 states to establish and run their own police forces alongside the Federal Nigeria Police Force. Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in support, with 289 in favour, one against, and one abstention.

The proposal, which has already scaled second reading in the Senate, must still be endorsed by at least 24 state assemblies and receive presidential assent before becoming law.

“I’m thankful to see that Nigeria’s House of Representatives passed this important policy that I’ve been calling for since @POTUS first asked me to investigate the genocide against Christians in Nigeria,” he said.

He recalled that the idea of state policing was one he had discussed with Nigeria’s First Lady and other delegations during visits to Washington.

“Ensuring states can protect their own citizens is a critical step toward ending persecution of Christians and addressing instability in Nigeria,” Moore noted.

The lawmaker also commended President Bola Tinubu for backing the proposal and urging its passage. He noted that while the reform process is not yet complete, the approval by the House marks significant progress toward strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

“There’s still a way to go before state‑level police forces will be in place, but this shows our hard work is paying off.”
