IThe Kwara State House of Assembly has passed a N656.6 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, marking a strategic shift towards infrastructure development by cutting recurrent expenditure and boosting capital funding.
The approved budget represents an increase of N10.6 billion over the initial proposal of N646 billion presented by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in December 2025.
Key revisions reveal the state’s emphasis on fiscal prudence and development spending:

- Recurrent revenue projections were revised upward by N10.5 billion to over N409.6 billion.
These adjustments aim to ensure “prudent financial management and support effective implementation of government programmes,” according to the legislative report.
The budget’s structure is decidedly pro-investment, with capital expenditure constituting a dominant share. This aligns with the administration’s stated goal of completing ongoing projects and addressing critical public infrastructure needs across the state.
The passage follows standard legislative procedures, including ministerial budget defence sessions. With the bill now sent to the governor for assent, Kwara State is set to operate its largest budget in recent history, one designed to leverage capital projects for economic growth while maintaining fiscal restraint.
