The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged for a decrease in school fees across tertiary institutions in the country, noting it will alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on students.
Speaking at the official declaration of Deniran Rioborue as an aspirant for NANS National President in Abuja on Thursday, Shedrack Anzaku, the Coordinator of NANS North Central Zone, emphasized, “What the association expects is school fees reduction and not increment due to the increasing rate of dropout.”
Anzaku expressed disapproval of any form of school fees hike during a period of widespread hardship in the country. He remarked, “We find it hard to comprehend the increment considering that, despite the removal of subsidy, schools primarily utilize diesel which has witnessed a decrease in price. Therefore, we anticipate a reduction in all aspects.”

Highlighting an incident at Bida Polytechnic, where students had not resumed due to an increase in school fees, Anzaku conveyed that even after the rector lowered the fees by N10,000, students were still hesitant to return.
Consequently, the student body’s leadership drafted a letter to the National Universities Commission (NUC), appealing for intervention in reducing school fees.
While commending the Federal Government for introducing the student loan policy to alleviate the financial burden on students, Anzaku voiced opposition to any school fee hikes attributed to the student loan Act, as the Act is designed to facilitate accessible education. He declared, “We have reached out to the NUC, urging them to request schools to lower their fees; otherwise, we will organize large-scale protests.
We are embarking on a campus tour to engage with Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts, advocating for reduced school fees.”
