Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, widely known as Mr P and one-half of the former P-Square music group, has responded to criticism from a social media user who suggested that he should retire from music because of his age.

The discussion started after an X user shared a clip from one of Mr P’s music videos and questioned why he was still making Afrobeats music at 44.

The user argued that the singer was getting close to 50 and should consider stepping away from the music scene.

The comment quickly drew reactions from other users, including media personality Do2dtun, who disagreed with the claim. He pointed out that many globally known musicians who are older than Peter Okoye are still actively performing and releasing music.

According to him, age should not be used as a reason to push artists out of the industry, especially when fans continue to support older entertainers around the world.

Reacting to the debate, Mr P suggested that the criticism was coming from people who were still unhappy about the breakup of P-Square.

He argued that some individuals had continued to search for reasons to attack him after earlier criticisms failed to gain traction.

The singer also questioned why some people celebrate international stars who continue performing well into their forties and fifties but expect him to stop making music despite being younger than several of them.

He said there was a clear double standard in the way some critics viewed local and foreign artists.

Mr P maintained that being in his forties should not prevent him from singing, dancing, or entertaining his fans.

“After dem realize say all those narratives no hold water, dem come with another one, Now he is too old to be singing and dancing.

“Meanwhile, na the same people go celebrate and hype Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown for doing exactly the same thing.”
