Women’s World Cup: United States and Netherlands share the spoils in big clash

The United States came from behind to draw 1-1 with the Netherlands in their second group game at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Captain Lindsey Horan was the goal-scorer for the defending champions after the Netherlands had threatened an upset.

New Manchester City signing Jill Roord drew the first blood when she put the Dutch side ahead. Her goal set the Netherlands on course for a great win after an incisive finish from the edge of the area.

The United States had won their previous 13 matches spanning three tournaments, but struggled to penetrate a solid Netherlands defence until Horan’s headed equaliser.

So far in this tournament, the Americans have failed to fire from cylinders as they have been known to do. Their game against the Netherlands was already looking like a frustrating one when Julie Ertz had a header deflected behind.

The United States defeated the Netherlands at the Olympics in 2021.

Interestingly, fourteen of the US players are appearing at the Women’s World Cup for the first time.

Andries Jonker’s side were absolutely impressive even without their influential influential forward Vivianne Miedema who is injured.

Top of Group E is the United States with four points from two games. That is the same number the Netherlands have as well, but trail on goal difference.

Up next for the United States is Portugal while the Netherlands face Vietnam in Dunedin.
