Women’s World Cup: South Africa surrender slim lead as Sweden grab late winner

Sweden came from behind to defeat reigning Africa champions South Africa 2-1 in their Women’s World Cup group match.

South Africa were very close to grabbing their first-ever point at a World Cup but surrendered to a last-gasp winner. The Africans had lost all three games on their only previous appearance in 2019.

Banyana Banyana took the lead through Hildah Magaia who scored in the 48th minute. However, Frida Rolfo’s deflected effort 17 minutes later levelled matters at the Wellington Regional Stadium.

On the stroke of 90 minutes, Arsenal defender Amanda Ilestedt’s decisive header won the game for the Swedes.

Sweden now top Group G with three points. The other two group members Argentina and Italy will play each other on Monday.

South Africa almost went ahead early in the game when captain Refiloe Jane attempted a 40-yard strike. It was a promising effort that eventually landed on the roof of the net.

The South Africans made good use of the counter attack as Sweden struggle to create clear-cut opportunities.

Desiree Ellis’ side began the second half like a house on fire, drawing the first blood when Swedish goalkeeper Musovic parried star player Thembi Kgatlana’s deflected shot into the path of Magaia who slotted into the net.

Sadly for the 28-year-old, she injured herself as she scored the opener, and was substituted shortly after.

Peter Gerhardsson’s side responded, pushing forward in search for an equaliser. This saw South Africa enjoy more counter-attacking chances and even looked more threatening.

Unfortunately for South Africa, Rolfo’s header was deflected by Lebohang Ramalepe into her own goal.

Sweden continued to attack but South Africa stood solid until Ilestedt’s strong header proved to be the winner.
