2026 UEFA Super Cup: PSG face Aston Villa August 12

Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa will face off in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup after both clubs capped remarkable European campaigns by winning UEFA’s top continental competitions this season.

UEFA has confirmed that the annual curtain-raiser between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League will take place on August 12, 2026, at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.

PSG booked their place in the showpiece match after successfully defending their UEFA Champions League crown. Luis Enrique’s side defeated Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw after extra time in Saturday’s final in Budapest. Ousmane Dembélé’s second-half penalty cancelled out Kai Havertz’s early opener before the French champions prevailed in the shootout.

The victory made PSG the first club since Real Madrid’s 2016–2018 run to retain the Champions League title, further strengthening their reputation as one of Europe’s dominant teams under Enrique.

Aston Villa secured their Super Cup berth by winning the UEFA Europa League, defeating German side Freiburg 3-0 in the final played in Istanbul on May 20. The triumph marked Villa’s first major European title since their historic European Cup success in 1982 and capped a remarkable resurgence under manager Unai Emery.

The English club’s return to European prominence has been one of the continent’s biggest success stories in recent years, with Emery guiding Villa from Premier League challengers to European trophy winners.

The UEFA Super Cup traditionally pits the winners of the Champions League against the Europa League champions and serves as the first major European club trophy of the new season.

According to UEFA: “Paris lifted the UEFA Super Cup in 2025, coming from 2-0 down to beat Tottenham on penalties, though they lost over two legs against Juventus in their first appearance in 1996.

“Aston Villa won their only previous UEFA Super Cup over two legs in 1982, seeing off Barcelona.”

The upcoming encounter in Salzburg will offer PSG the opportunity to add another European trophy to their growing collection, while Aston Villa will be aiming to continue their resurgence by claiming a second Super Cup title in the club’s history. With two recent European champions meeting on Austrian soil, the fixture is already shaping up to be one of the standout matches of the summer.
