President Bola Tinubu has nominated Joseph Tegbe as Minister of Power.
He will fill a key gap in his cabinet following the resignation of Adebayo Adelabu to pursue his governorship ambition.
Adelabu exited the role on 30 April to focus on his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State, citing the requirements of the amended electoral law, which mandates public office holders to resign before contesting elections.
The announcement, made on Thursday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the nomination has been forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional procedures.

Tegbe’s nomination points to a deliberate shift towards technocratic leadership in Nigeria’s power sector.
With more than three decades of experience spanning both public and private sectors, he has built a reputation around fiscal reform, governance systems, and institutional restructuring.
He previously served as a Senior Partner at KPMG Africa, where he led advisory work focused on policy reform, regulatory design, and investment structuring across multiple sectors.
Experience
Until his nomination, Tegbe held the role of Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, where he coordinated development initiatives between Nigeria and China, aligning them with broader Africa-focused cooperation frameworks.
Beyond his broader policy work, Tegbe has had direct involvement in Nigeria’s electricity ecosystem.
He has advised both the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, giving him practical insight into the regulatory and commercial dynamics of the sector.
The Presidency said it expects his expertise to help drive reforms, improve grid stability, and attract long-term investment into the industry.
“The President expects the Minister-designate to deploy his experience to advance critical reforms and deliver tangible improvements in the power sector,” Onanuga said.

If confirmed, Tegbe will inherit a sector still grappling with deep-rooted challenges, including gas supply constraints, ageing infrastructure, and the ongoing implementation of the Electricity Act 2023.
