Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has accepted the presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections.
The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) emerged as the party’s sole candidate during the NDC national convention held in Abuja on Saturday, after no other contestant obtained the party’s nomination form before the closing date.
In his acceptance address, the former governor appreciated the party’s leadership, including NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson, members of the National Working Committee, and delegates from different parts of the country.

He said his emergence represented a national assignment focused on rebuilding the country rather than fulfilling a personal political aspiration.
Mr Obi stated that Nigeria could not attain sustainable growth and development if ethnic, religious and regional sentiments continued to shape national conversations.

According to him, the country’s progress depended on unity, collective trust and a shared commitment among citizens.
He further warned that disunity posed a serious danger to national stability, stressing that countries often decline when citizens become divided against themselves.
Addressing the security situation, Mr Obi lamented the increasing wave of insecurity across the country, noting that terrorism and violent crimes had worsened in recent years.

He referenced international security reports which, according to him, indicated that Nigeria’s ranking among terrorism-affected nations had deteriorated steadily.
The former presidential candidate argued that meaningful economic advancement would remain difficult in an atmosphere where citizens and businesses lived in fear.
He maintained that safeguarding lives, securing communities and restoring confidence along business and transport corridors should remain a top priority for any serious administration.
Mr Obi also recalled the achievements of the Nigerian Armed Forces in previous years, highlighting periods when Nigerian troops gained global recognition for peacekeeping and conflict resolution operations in several countries.
He listed missions carried out in nations such as Rwanda, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Lebanon, Cambodia and Haiti, among others.

The former governor added that Nigerian military officers once occupied highly respected positions within international peacekeeping structures, citing retired Lieutenant General Isaac Obiakor as an example.
He assured party members and Nigerians that an NDC administration under his leadership would confront insecurity decisively while restoring the country’s image both at home and abroad.
