World number one Jannik Sinner accepts three-month suspension after doping violation

Jannik Sinner has agreed to a three-month suspension from tennis following two positive tests for clostebol last March.

His punishment runs from February 9 to May 4, allowing him to compete at the French Open starting May 25.

The reigning Australian Open champion clarified that the banned substance entered his system unintentionally. He claimed his physiotherapist applied a spray containing clostebol to treat a cut before giving him a massage.

Although the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed that Sinner did not cheat, the strict rules still held him accountable. Consequently, he opted to accept WADA’s resolution rather than prolong the case.

“This case had been hanging over me now for nearly a year, and the process still had a long time to run with a decision, maybe only at the end of the year,” Sinner stated.

The world number one acknowledged his responsibility for his team’s actions and recognized WADA’s firm anti-doping regulations as essential for protecting the sport. Thus, he chose to accept the three-month suspension instead of extending legal proceedings.

WADA emphasised that, despite Sinner’s lack of intent, he remains responsible for any violations by his team. His absence means missing major tournaments, yet he will return in time for the Rome Open, a crucial clay-court event before Roland Garros.
