Petra Kvitova has officially announced her decision to retire from professional tennis at the end of this summer. This marks the conclusion of a remarkable 19-year career.

The Czech star, who captured the hearts of fans worldwide, confirmed she will hang up her racket after the 2025 US Open.

Kvitova, now 34, leaves the tennis scene after grabbing two stunning Wimbledon triumphs in 2011 and 2014. These victories made her the first Czech woman since Jana Novotna in 1998 to lift the prestigious trophy. She achieved the feat by famously defeating Maria Sharapova on Centre Court.

Remarkably, Novotna and tennis legend Martina Navratilova were in the Royal Box that day to witness her moment of glory.

Her career also featured a memorable run to the 2019 Australian Open final, showcasing her resilience and class on multiple surfaces. However, in recent seasons, injuries and form struggles led to a dip in her rankings, with her last Grand Slam quarter-final appearance coming in 2020.

Kvitova took a break from tennis throughout 2024 to embrace motherhood, giving birth to her first child. Although she returned to the court in February 2025, the former world number two admitted that her priorities and outlook had shifted.

Reflecting on her career via a heartfelt post on X, Kvitova expressed deep gratitude for exceeding her childhood dreams. She shared that she never expected to become a professional player, let alone travel the globe and compete in the sport’s grandest arenas.

Interestingly, Kvitova was recently granted a wildcard for Wimbledon, becoming the only non-British player included in the initial batch of selections. Yet, despite this honour, she confirmed that the US Open would be her final tournament as a professional.
