Spain took the lead early through a penalty converted by Fernando Hierro, but Nigeria responded almost immediately with relentless attacking pressure and quick transitions that unsettled the Spanish defence. Mutiu Adepoju restored parity with a well-taken finish before Garba Lawal completed a rapid turnaround that gave Nigeria a surprise lead.

Okocha, operating as the creative force in midfield, dictated the tempo of the game with his close control, dribbling ability, and quick passing. His influence kept Nigeria dominant in key phases of the match, allowing the Super Eagles to maintain pressure against a Spanish side considered one of the favourites for the tournament.

Spain pulled level again in the second half through a goal from Raúl González, but the contest swung back in Nigeria’s favour when pressure led to an own goal by goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, sealing a famous 3–2 win for the African side.

The match continues to be remembered as one of Nigeria’s greatest World Cup victories and a defining showcase of Okocha’s brilliance on the global stage.
