Troost-Ekong issues rallying cry as Super Eagles target crucial World Cup playoff victory over Gabon

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has called for total concentration and unity as Nigeria prepares to face Gabon in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs in Morocco.

The crucial encounter takes place at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat on Thursday. Victory for either side will secure a spot in Sunday’s final against either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The eventual champion of this mini-tournament will advance to the Intercontinental Playoffs in March 2026, where one more win could seal qualification for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Troost-Ekong, who has been a pillar of leadership for the Super Eagles, emphasised the importance of mental strength and tactical discipline ahead of the high-stakes tie. The 31-year-old defender insisted that the team cannot afford any slip-ups as they aim to reclaim Nigeria’s place on football’s biggest stage.

“We’ve built great chemistry, and the mindset in camp is positive,” Troost-Ekong told Olympics.com. “Although preparation time is short, we’re focused. It’s a one-off game on neutral ground, and we know we must win to reach the final playoff. There’s no room for error.”

Captain warns against complacency as Aubameyang threat looms

While Nigeria enters the tie as favourites, Troost-Ekong was quick to caution his teammates against complacency, especially with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the line for Gabon.

The Olympique Marseille striker has been in red-hot form, netting seven goals in the qualifiers and driving the Panthers’ remarkable run.

“Gabon is a strong team,” the defender added.

“Aubameyang continues to lead from the front, causing problems for defenders. I’ve played against him in Saudi Arabia, and I know what he brings. In Africa, you can’t underestimate any team, and we certainly won’t do that with Gabon.”

The Super Eagles, brimming with attacking talent and defensive stability, will rely on experience and composure to navigate the pressure.
