After Walk-Off: Senegal stuns host Morocco to win AFCON 2025 in match marred by referee controversy

Senegal have won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating hosts Morocco in a match marked by intense drama on Sunday night. The West African side won 1-0 in extra-time after a goalless 90 minutes.

The match was overshadowed by chaotic scenes including a player walk-off. Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal for the Teranga Lions.

The controversy began deep in stoppage time. Senegal had a goal disallowed for a push. Then, moments later, Morocco were awarded penalty after a VAR review. Senegalese coach Pape Thiaw directed his players to leave the pitch in protest.

The team returned following a 14-minute delay as legend Sadio Mane helped persuade them back.

Moroccan star Brahim Diaz then took the penalty. He attempted a poorly executed ‘Panenka’ chip, as former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy caught the ball easily.

Senegal scored soon after extra time began. Pape Gueye struck a powerful shot into the top corner and the goal secured Senegal’s second continental title.

Morocco coach Walid Regragui criticised the walk-off. He called the events “shameful for Africa”. His team failed to end its 50-year wait for the trophy.

The fallout from this chaotic finale will continue, while officials can be banned or fined.
