Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday inaugurated the Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover in Akure.It marks the completion of the first flyover ever built in Ondo State’s capital city.
The landmark project, situated along the busy Ilesha–Akure–Owo Expressway, is expected to ease years of traffic congestion, improve safety and stimulate economic activities across the corridor.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Shettima described the flyover as a strategic infrastructure project capable of boosting regional connectivity and opening up new economic opportunities within the state and the wider South-West region.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described the project as a major milestone in the state’s development journey, noting that the junction had for years been notorious for gridlock and fatal accidents.

According to him, the flyover was designed to address long-standing traffic problems, improve road safety and enhance economic productivity within Akure metropolis.
“This project represents a deliberate effort to address long-standing traffic challenges, improve safety, and enhance economic productivity within the metropolis,” the governor said.
Aiyedatiwa acknowledged that the project was initiated during the administration of the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

He added that his government remained committed to completing projects that directly impacted the lives of residents.
Flyover rename
However, Aiyedatiwa announced that the new bridge would now be known as the Pa Reuben Fasoranti Flyover, in honour of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.
Fasoranti marked his 100th birthday on 11 May 2026.
The governor said the decision reflected the state’s appreciation for the elder statesman’s decades of leadership, sacrifice and contribution to national development.
Aiyedatiwa also highlighted several ongoing infrastructure projects across the state aimed at improving transportation and attracting investment.
The projects include the dualisation of the Akure–Idanre, Akungba–Ikare and Okitipupa–Igbokoda roads, as well as asphalt overlay works covering more than 100 kilometres across the three senatorial districts.

He added that major rehabilitation works were also ongoing on College Road in Igbokoda and the Akure–Imafon axis to improve local connectivity.
Indigenous professionals
The governor praised the engineers, contractors and other indigenous professionals involved in the construction of the flyover.
He commended their technical expertise and dedication to delivering the project.

He also thanked residents of Akure for their patience throughout the construction period.
He assured them that the bridge was built to serve generations to come.
The event attracted top government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs and members of the state executive council.
