Banky W: An Entertainer and Mentor Par Excellence

Banky W

Banky W is a prolific musician whose works speak for him. With a superb voice, he has been able to penetrate the Nigerian music industry successfully. He is not just a singer; he is an actor, a businessman, politician, philanthropist, and a mentor. If you call him an entertainer par excellence, you are right. Banky W is the definition of excellence and success. He has thrived in the industry and creates value wherever he finds himself.

This writer was privileged to be among the 100 selected persons to be mentored by Olubankole ‘’Banky W’’ Wellington on August 14, 2021 at the Custodian Mentors Conference which was organized by Custodian and Allied Insurance Plc. Apart from Banky W, other mentors who graced the event were Leke Alder and Funke Bucknor-Obruthe. The Group Managing Director of Custodian and Allied Insurance Plc, Oluwole Oshin was also present.

However, I shall be placing focus on the mentorship lessons from the ‘’Ebute Meta’’ crooner. Born on March 27, 1981, Wellington has had his fair share of life’s challenges. From his early years as an artist, Banky W has grown into the person he is presently through consistency, hard work, commitment, creativity, discipline, humility, and making himself valuable. Above all, he acknowledges the power of God Almighty in all that he does. Below are some of the lessons the 40-year-old father-of-one shared to I and the other mentees.

Lessons from the Custodian Mentors Conference

1. Do not worry about fitting in:

Banky W emphasized on the need for people to stand out. A lot of persons feel unfulfilled despite their financial achievements. Hence, he advised that people should discover their purpose instead. Although he is a graduate of engineering, he knew his purpose was to sing and make people happy. His kind of music stood him out whenever he performed. He added that people should remain focused in all that they do. Consequently, his mentees should never get their validation from the ‘’comments’’ section.

2. Setbacks are normal; don’t give up:

Wellington reiterated on the need to dream, take actions, and persevere. He said our realities are sometimes far from where our dreams are. Hence, we need to have a strong character. A strong character is essential to scale through tough seasons. At intervals, the actor gave instances where he built a strong character in his challenging moments, and it paid off for him in the long run.

The ‘’Wedding Party’’ star continued, ‘’It is okay to have a challenging start. It is okay to fail but it is not okay not to try at all. Develop a stomach for rejection; grow the skin for failure. Do not live on complaints; learn the lessons instead. If your present work isn’t good enough, be true to yourself. However, do not be afraid to take risks. Give your all to everything that you do so that when you fail peradventure, you will know that you tried at least. Don’t give up!’’

3. Be yourself; invest in yourself; be valuable

In addition, Wellington talked about the need to be oneself. It helps a lot because when people are looking for what you have, you will be called. He insisted that we invest in ourselves because we cannot give what we do not have. After investing in ourselves, then we can invest in others. Be a vessel and solution to somebody’s prayers, he said.

Besides, the entertainer admonished that we add value anywhere we find ourselves. As a brand ambassador, he looks for other ways he can add value to the brand. Hence, we should always look for ways to make impact.

4. Be creative, humble; work hard, be disciplined

He emphasized on the need to be creative. He said that it is not compulsory something has to be done in the same manner, repeatedly. Other ways of doing things can be adopted.

He added, ’’Be faithful in the little you have as you await the bigger opportunities. Be disciplined and committed to your destiny. Remember, great destinies require great character. Be humble; it is very important. Dreams do come true but you may not realise it when they do. Don’t stop trying.

5. Put God first in all your endeavors:

The ‘’Jaiye Orimi’’ singer also recounted his early years in the industry and how consistency paid off for him. He has had some near death experiences – he has been attacked by armed robbers and has equally survived skin cancer. Hence, he is forever grateful to God for life.

He concluded, ‘’Serve God. Whatever you do, try to put God first. Don’t get your validation from the comments section. Pray to live long but when it is time to die, ensure you die empty. If you work hard, you will achieve. Never give up!’’
