Steph Curry and Sabrina Lonescu go center stage in the All-Star Weekend

Golden State Warriors Superstar Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty added a unique perspective to the All-Star Weekend as they squared off in the first ever NBA vs WNBA three-point contest.

Sabrina with her 37 points out of a possible 40 in the three-point contest last season set an all-time record for the WNBA and NBA.

This year however, she announced just before the match that she’ll shoot from the NBA line rather than the WNBA equivalents on her X.

She remarked “that decision to move to the NBA line was something I wanted to do from the beginning. Continuing to push boundaries and equal the playing field. Knowing that I had the opportunity to do that, in terms of picking where I wanted to shoot from and continuing to move the needle in that direction is what I wanted to do”.

The WNBA star also added “no matter how challenging or difficult that decision seems, I would rather go down fighting for what I know I’m capable of doing.”

Sabrina started off the contest and away from all of the pressures racked up 26 points to put Steph Curry on his toes. Showing the WNBA superstars are indeed made of substance.

The Golden State Warriors star pushed to the three-point line just after and went one better by taking 29 points to win the contest.

Sabrina tied on 26 point with the likes of Karl Towns, Tyrese Haliburton, Trae Young and Damian Lillard while Curry was the only one to pass that mark on the night.

This inaugural one-on-one showdown garnered much interest across the media space and NBA commissioner Adam Silver opened up the possibility about having more of such crossover events and also admitted the idea originated from Steph and Sabrina.

The contest most importantly served as a chance to raise money for both stars charities as well the NBA foundation with each regular shot worth $1,000, every moneyball $2,000 and the special Starry Range Ball commanding $3,000.

Discussing with Ernie Johnson and Curry after the contest, Ionescu buttressed “I think a night like tonight shows a lot of young girls and boys that, if you can shoot, you can shoot. It doesn’t matter if you’re a girl or boy. It just matters about the heart you have and wanting to be the best you can be”.
