Aboutrika slams South Africa coach Broos after Mexico defeat

Egyptian football icon Mohamed Aboutrika has launched a scathing attack on South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos. His criticism followed their 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Group A clash at Estadio Azteca saw South Africa struggle to impose themselves. Co-hosts Mexico capitalised, while discipline issues worsened matters.

“He’s afraid of the game,” Aboutrika said bluntly after the final whistle. “I put the blame on the coach. A disastrous match.”

South Africa’s approach was questioned from the outset. According to Aboutrika, the lineup signalled a defensive mindset.

Two red cards further complicated their challenge against the hosts. Mexico also had a player sent off in a heated encounter.

South Africa under pressure as tactical decisions come under heavy scrutiny

Aboutrika did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance.

“I am shocked as an African,” he added.

He insisted the squad possesses far greater quality than shown on the pitch. “Mexico isn’t that special,” he argued.

The defeat leaves South Africa with little margin for error moving forward. Upcoming matches now carry significant pressure.
