Saraki celebrates Obasanjo at 89, calls him “A living manuscript of the Nigerian story”

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has extended his congratulations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the elder statesman marked his 89th birthday on Thursday.

Saraki shared his message in a post on the social media platform X, where he reflected on Obasanjo’s lasting role in Nigeria’s history and public life.

He wrote. “History is often written in the past tense, but the life of our dear former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, remains a living manuscript of the Nigerian story—still defying the odds and still demanding our attention.”

In the message, Saraki also prayed for Obasanjo and acknowledged the continued influence of the former military head of state and civilian president.

He added, “And so, Baba, as you mark another year, we celebrate not just the length of your years but the relentless relevance of your voice.

“In times of national uncertainty, may your wisdom remain a trusted compass, and may your legendary wit remain as sharp as ever.

“Happy 89th Birthday, Your Excellency. May God grant you continued strength, sound health, and peace in the years ahead.”

Meanwhile, Bola Tinubu also congratulated Obasanjo on the milestone. In his message, Tinubu described the former leader as an elder statesman with a “towering influence,” noting “the zeal and wisdom he has brought into Nigeria’s development process through his books and regular interventions, revealing a depth of patriotism to nation-building.”

Speaking about his health and longevity, Obasanjo reportedly said he believes his continued life at 89 is part of God’s plan. The former president added that he remains in good health and strength.

He also criticised those wishing him dead, insisting he would continue to live actively for as long as God desires.

“God has assured me He has more for me to do on earth, and He has given me the wherewithal to do it. I dey kampe as usual,” he was quoted as saying.
