Did the Simpsons predict Apple’s Vision Pro reality set?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

If you are a fan of The Simpsons, you might remember an episode from 2016 where Lisa visits a futuristic theme park called Futureland. There, she tries on a virtual reality headset that shows her a vision of her future wedding.

The headset looks remarkably similar to the Apple Vision Pro reality set that was recently unveiled by the tech giant. The device is a pair of glasses that can project images and sounds onto the wearer’s eyes and ears, creating an immersive and realistic experience.

The Apple Vision Pro reality set is expected to revolutionize the entertainment, gaming, education, and health industries. Users will be able to enjoy movies, games, concerts, and lectures as if they were there in person. They will also be able to interact with virtual characters and environments, and even create their own.

But how did The Simpsons predict this technology 8 years ago? Was it a lucky coincidence, or did the show’s writers have some insider knowledge?

According to Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, the show’s predictions are not based on any secret information or psychic abilities. He said in an interview that the show’s writers are just “very smart and very funny” people who like to imagine what the future might look like.

He also said that the show’s predictions are often influenced by science fiction and pop culture. For example, the virtual reality headset that Lisa wears in Futureland was inspired by a similar device that appeared in the 2016 movie The Lawnmower Man.

Groening added that sometimes the show’s predictions are not even intentional. He said that sometimes they just make jokes that turn out to be true later on.

He said: “We’ve been on so long that we’ve covered every possible topic. We’ve done every kind of joke. So it’s inevitable that some of them will come true.”

The Simpsons is not the only show that has predicted future events and inventions. Other examples include Star Trek, which predicted cell phones, tablets, and video calls; 2001: A Space Odyssey, which predicted artificial intelligence and voice assistants; and Back to the Future Part II, which predicted hoverboards, self-lacing shoes, and video glasses.

These shows demonstrate how creative imagination can sometimes anticipate or inspire real-world innovations. They also show how art and science can influence each other in surprising ways.
