Dubai has arrested and is set to prosecute Hushpuppi – a Nigerian Instagram celebrity – for multiple counts of fraud.
According to reports, prosecutors have charged Hushpuppi for obtaining money through fraudulent means. It was also revealed that he was referred to the Dubai public prosecution. Therefore, he is currently being questioned by prosecutors at the Bur Dubai section.
Security officers in the Emirate arrested Hushpuppi and 12 others for online crime that targets companies and individuals.
The prosecutors explained how he and his men send letters from email addresses identical to those of legitimate companies. They target customers of these companies, with the sole purpose of diverting payments to themselves.
Hushpuppi was arrested by Dubai Police on June 10. Apparently, he is wanted for crimes in Europe, the United States and Nigeria.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reacted to the arrest of Hushpuppi. On Thursday, the body said Hushpuppi also has a case to answer with the commission.
The anti-graft agency described him as āNigeriaās most-wanted hackerā, and gave his real name as Ramoni Igbalode.
This is different from Raymond Abbas which Dubai officials say is Hushpuppiās real name.
In its statement, EFCC said it is engaging with America’s FBI in tracing victims of his fraudulent transaction, as well as other accomplices with direct involvement with the fraudster. Local cyber criminals in his money laundering network are also being investigated.
The commission has stated that the 38 year old was arrested in connection with a $35 million (USD) ventilator scam.
Hushpuppi is the most high-profile Nigerian to be arrested so far in 2020. This is months after Obinwanne Okeke and Ismaila Mompha were arrested in August and October 2019, respectively. They were arrested for their alleged roles in separate multinational fraud.
Hushpuppi, who has over two million followers on Instagram, is known for his display of wealth on social media.
