Top five celebrities who delved into politics in 2022


As the 2023 general election is approaching, several well-known figures in the entertainment industry will be contesting elective positions at the polls.

NRTC gathered that since the not-too-young bill was passed, youths’ participation in governance had increased compared to when it was dominated by full-time politicians, businessmen, ex-military generals, ex-governors among others. 

Funke Akindele

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, will be running as the Peoples Democratic Party deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State.

The Best Actress in a Comedy at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards was announced as running mate by the PDP Lagos State governorship candidate, Olajide Adediran, popularly called Jandor.

Jandor while announcing Funke Akindele, said he believed in the proficiency of the younger epoch and the female gender to rule over the affairs of the Lagos State to bring fresh and workable ideas that would move the state forward.

However,  the actress in her confirmation of the position said she suspended her acting career to focus on her new political aspiration.

The 44-year-old actress in a video on her verified Instagram page said becoming deputy governor was an opportunity to help liberate and improve the well-being of Lagosians most especially the restrained youth, women, and the girl child.

Tonto Dikeh

 

Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh is running as the deputy governorship candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State.

The party’s governorship candidate, Tonye Ibraye, announced her emergence as his running mate in June 2022. 

He said the actress would join them in the rescue of the river state(RiversRescueMission2023) as well as strive to improve the standard of living for Rivers State citizens.

 

The controversial Nollywood star and a mother-of-one in an interview with the Ovation Magazine publisher, Dele Momodu, in 2020, announced going into politics and ruling Nigeria in 2023.

Carolyn Hutchings

 

Nigeria reality tv star Caroline Hutchings will be running as the deputy governor to Iboro Otu, the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Akwa Ibom State.

Hutching became a running mate based on her love for humanity, leadership ability, and commitment towards the betterment of Akwa Ibom communities, AAC said. 

The 35-year-old actress and a mother-of-three made her screen debut in 2004 and made a comeback in 2016, producing and starring in the romantic thriller Stalker.

Femi Branch

 

Nigeria’s popular actor, Chief Femi Branch will be the running mate for National Rescue Movement Party (NRM) in Ogun State, Dr. Tofunmi Ogunronbi in the 2023 general elections.

The 52-year-old and a major player in the entertainment industry had featured in many stage plays and movies. 

He came into the limelight in an MTN advert, ‘Domino’, by Tajudeen Adepetu’s Alpha Vision, and ‘Iwa l’ewa’ by Oga Bello. 

Banky W

 

Actor and singer, Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W won the PDP primary ticket for the Eti-Osa constituency in the Federal House of Representatives ahead of the 2023 general election.

The 41-year-old contested for the same seat in 2019 under the umbrella of Modern Democratic Party (MDP) and lost to the All Progressive Congress(APC) candidate, Babajide Obanikoro, the first son of a former minister of state for defence, Musiliu Obanikoro. 

The singer who married Tolulope Adesua Etomi-Wellington, professionally known as Adesua Etomi in 2017 had featured in many movies.
