Matheus Cunha scored a dramatic late winner as Manchester United defeated Premier League leaders Arsenal in a five-goal thriller.
The result delivered the Gunners their first home defeat of the season at Emirates Stadium.
Following wins for Manchester City and Aston Villa, Arsenal’s lead at the top has been cut. What once looked commanding is now reduced to a four-point cushion.
Arsenal began sharply and took the lead in the 29th minute. United defender Lisandro Martinez diverted the ball into his own net under pressure.
However, the hosts soon invited trouble with a careless moment in midfield. Martin Zubimendi’s loose pass released Bryan Mbeumo through on goal. The Cameroonian forward calmly rounded David Raya and rolled into an empty net.
Five minutes after the restart, United struck again to shock the Emirates. Patrick Dorgu hammered a superb effort off the underside of the crossbar after being assisted by Bruno Fernandes.
Late drama undoes Arsenal’s recovery efforts
Mikel Arteta reacted decisively, throwing on Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino and Ben White. The quadruple change briefly lifted tempo and urgency.
Merino thought he had rescued a point in the 84th minute after he bundled home from a corner to ignite renewed hope.

That optimism lasted barely three minutes as substitute Cunha collected a pass from Kobbie Mainoo and struck from distance.

The curling effort from 25 yards found the bottom corner beyond Raya. United were ahead again, and this time they stayed there. The victory moves the Red Devils into fourth place. The Gunners had chances in recent rounds to extend their advantage. Two goalless draws and this defeat have shifted the title mood.
The atmosphere grew tense, with supporters voicing displeasure throughout the second half. Arteta has previously framed crowd groans as ambition. This result, though, serves as a clear warning sign.
Mbeumo impresses as United find transfer bright spot
United’s recruitment since 2013 has often disappointed. Still, Bryan Mbeumo already looks a rare success. After three bids, United paid £65m to prise him from Brentford. They were convinced by his 20 league goals last season.
Now, he has eight this campaign. His equaliser showed composure, but his threat extended beyond that moment. Mbeumo nearly produced something spectacular from a Fernandes pass. His first-time lob briefly had Raya scrambling backwards.
Up next for the table leaders is Kairat in the Champions League on Wednesday night. They then travel to Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United, meanwhile, welcome Fulham on Sunday, 1 February.
