Substitute Joselu then produced a fantastic acrobatic overhead kick late in the second period to extend the lead.

Ex-Chelsea man Mason Mount had United’s best chance in the first half. New goalkeeper Andre Onana made a good save from Joselu on his first United appearance.

Manchester United had some moments of smooth, beautiful football but all that couldn’t count without a goal.

Manager Erik Ten Hag raised eyebrows when he selected 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo in midfield against Real Madrid’s midfield of Bellingham, Luka Modric, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

However, after impressing against Arsenal in New Jersey, the teenager was unfortunate to see just two minutes of action. After Casemiro tripped Rodrygo, the latter collided with Mainoo, leaving the youngster injured on the ground.

Anthony Rudiger set up Bellingham with a delightful, long pass with the Englishman finishing the ball with brilliance.

In the 89th minute, Joselu, signed on loan from Espanyol this summer, produced a spectacular overhead kick that beat Onana.
