Grammy-winning R&B sensation Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, has shared a candid account of the tough moments she experienced at the beginning of her music journey, including an embarrassing episode where she was booed off stage during a school performance.
In a recent conversation with Big Boy TV, the Crazy Tings hitmaker reflected on how what was meant to be an exciting opportunity turned into a humbling experience.
“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to receiving a standing ovation.
“But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” she recalled.

According to the singer, the incident was one of several early rejections she faced while trying to establish herself in the industry. Rather than give up, however, she chose to remain focused on her long-term goal of building a career in music.
Tems explained that part of the resistance she encountered may have stemmed from her decision to remain authentic. While many emerging artists at the time leaned toward performing covers or adopting already popular sounds, she stayed committed to developing her own unique style.
Looking back now, the award-winning star said she has no regrets about refusing to dilute her artistry. Despite the early setbacks and pressure to conform, she is grateful she held on to her originality, a choice that has since helped shape her global success.
