Jota’s sons to lead emotional mascot moment before Liverpool vs Wolves

Liverpool and Wolves will share an unforgettable moment of unity at Anfield on Saturday as two of Diogo Jota’s young sons, Dinis and Duarte, accompany the matchday mascots onto the pitch.

The touching gesture will take place before kick-off in honour of the former forward who tragically died in a car accident in Spain in July alongside his brother, Andre Silva.

It marks the first meeting between Liverpool and Wolves since his passing, therefore emotions are expected to run high.

Jota, aged 28 at the time of his death, spent three memorable seasons with Wolves before moving to Anfield in 2020, where he became a fan favourite. Saturday’s Premier League fixture is expected to serve as both a football contest and a powerful tribute. Liverpool manager Arne Slot reflected deeply in his programme notes, admitting the year has brought powerful emotions.

“Reflecting on everything that has happened over the last 12 months ignites a rollercoaster of emotions,” said Slot.

He added that Christmas makes the loss even more deeply felt, especially for Jota’s loved ones. “Doing so leads me to think especially of the family of Diogo Jota on what will be their first Christmas without him.”

Slot also expressed hope that the overwhelming affection for Jota brings healing. “I can only hope that the feeling of love and affection that Diogo still generates brings them some solace.”

On the pitch, Jota’s contribution remains written in Liverpool history. He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, while helping the Reds lift the Premier League title as well as the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022.

Wolves will also remember him fondly, after he netted 44 times in 131 games following his arrival from Atletico Madrid.
