In what proved to be one of football’s most historic comeback stories, Sheffield Wednesday sealed their place in the Sky Bet League One play-off final after beating Peterborough on penalties.
Sheffield Wednesday trailed 4-0 going into the encounter on Thursday night, but scored not two, not three, but four goals to push the tie into extra time. Liam Palmer’s sensational equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time ensured the tie headed into extra time.
Records have it that no single team in play-off history had ever overturned more than a two-goal advantage.

The Owls, at Hillsborough on the night, were nothing short of electric and that unbelievable performance have helped them secure a place at Wembley.
Michael Smith drew the first blood in the ninth minute from the spot before Lee Gregory extended the lead. Sheffield Wednesday fans were quite satisfied with the 2-0 halftime lead and kept hope of qualification alive.
When Reece James scored Wednesday’s third in the 71st minute, the atmosphere in the Stadium became an exhilarating one. From then on, The hosts became even more ambitious and launched every kind of attacking threat at their opponents.
Dramatic night
Palmer’s 98th minute equaliser to force extra time completed a remarkable comeback that was too good to be true. Sheffield Wednesday had done the unthinkable against Peterborough on the night.
Gregory, who had scored earlier, then netted against his own team in extra time to give the away side a 5-4 aggregate lead. However, Scottish striker Callum Paterson’s goal in the 112th minute levelled the tie 5-5.
Sheffield Wednesday converted all five out of five penalties while Peterborough missed one of theirs, as the Owls historically booked a date with destiny – a golden chance to make it to the English Championship.
