Former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has urged the screening committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid arbitrary disqualification of aspirants.

Dickson, who’s the party leader, urged the committee to instead promote constructive engagement and consensus-building ahead of the partyโ€™s primary elections.

He made the call during a strategic meeting with members of the screening panel, which comprises party leaders, professionals, and representatives of the National Working Committee (NWC).

Addressing the committee, Dickson emphasised that their mandate should focus on fostering unity rather than deepening divisions.

He advised the panel to consider the local political realities of each state and constituency carefully.

He urged them to encourage consensus where multiple aspirants are vying for a single ticket.

โ€œThe committee should not see itself as a panel for arbitrary disqualification, but rather as a body that engages aspirants constructively,โ€ Dickson said.

He noted that promoting consensus remained vital to avoiding โ€œrancorous primariesโ€ and ensuring that the committee produces comprehensive reports capable of guiding the partyโ€™s final selection process.

Dickson ruled out the handpicking of candidates, reiterating that the NDC would not tolerate nepotism or backroom deals.

โ€œIn the NDC, tickets will not be gifted arbitrarily,โ€ he said, stressing that the partyโ€™s selection process remained firmly anchored on widespread consultation, merit, competence, and the wishes of grassroots stakeholders.

    Confidence

The lawmaker expressed delight at the rising popularity of the party.

He noted that the high number of aspirants seeking the NDC ticket nationwide demonstrated that the party had established itself as a credible alternative for national renewal.

He extended his gratitude to the aspirants for their trust in the movement and thanked members of the screening committee for taking on the demanding assignment.

The meeting also provided a platform for Dickson to host an NDC delegation from Rivers State.

During the interactive session, he charged the Rivers stakeholders to protect the founding ideals of the party and work actively to strengthen its structures across the state ahead of the upcoming election season.

Reaffirming the partyโ€™s long-term direction, Dickson concluded that the future of the NDC depended on its ability to sustain a transparent, inclusive, and people-oriented political culture.
