From Stamford Bridge to Surulere: Chelsea star Adarabioyo launches Youth Cup, meets Sanwo-Olu

Chelsea’s newly crowned world champion, Tosin Adarabioyo, returned to his roots with purpose, football, and a possible Super Eagles future on the horizon.

Fresh off Chelsea’s triumph at the revamped FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, Nigerian-descended defender Tosin Adarabioyo is back on home soil.

The towering 27-year-old was warmly received on Tuesday by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as he officially kickstarted a community-focused football initiative that bears his name.

Although born in London, Adarabioyo has long maintained close ties to his Nigerian roots, and this latest visit only deepens that connection.

Rather than enjoy a quiet offseason, the centre-back is taking grassroots development into his own hands by launching the inaugural Tosin Adarabioyo Youth Cup in Lagos.

Significantly, the competition which kicked off on Wednesday, July 23, features four teams: 36 Lion FC, Mavilon FC, Seamoriow Football Academy, and a select side representing the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA).

These clubs are set to clash in what promises to be a showcase of raw talent and youth ambition, with Adarabioyo himself expected to be present for parts of the tournament.

Nigeria calling? Defender’s Super Eagles switch gathers momentum

While his international career remains in limbo, Adarabioyo’s growing involvement in Nigeria has reignited speculation about a potential switch from England to the Super Eagles.

Though he has previously featured for England at various youth levels, he is yet to earn a senior cap – and this has left the door wide open for Nigeria to swoop in.

Notably, his recent success with Chelsea has raised his profile further, and his current offseason tour appears more strategic than sentimental. Indeed, multiple sources have suggested that discussions around his international allegiance are no longer hypothetical, especially as Nigeria eyes a fresh defensive era.
